Josh Spyra will attend the University of Pittsburgh in the fall to study structural engineering.
His interest was enhanced during woodshop class at South Allegheny High School where he and his classmates learned to build and install a customized portable laser cutter.
The cutter can cut or etch any organic material, such as ceramic, stone, wood, paper, glass and leather.
“We got to see how it is made and not just assembled, and how it actually works and functions,” said Josh, 18, of Liberty.
“It demystified the laser and showed us how a professional goes through the design process,” said Seth Hitchens, 18, of Port Vue, who also plans to study mechanical engineering at Pitt.
